Zac James Nicholson is an American filmmaker from New York City working across narrative, documentary, and music-focused film. His work as a director and cinematographer is known for its cinematic style and nuanced, character-driven perspective.

Most recently, Zac was director of photography on the narrative feature On A String, directed by comedian Isabel Hagen and starring Hagen, Eric Bogosian, Dylan Baker, and Jamie Lee. He also completed Four Rational People, a feature documentary chronicling the final world tour of the nine-time Grammy Award–winning Emerson String Quartet as they prepare to disband after 47 years together.

He is finishing up post-production on a feature-length documentary about My Father’s Place, a seminal but underrecognized 1970s New York rock club and the unlikely impresario behind it. The film is slated for festival release in fall 2025, alongside a slate of other narrative and documentary projects in development.
